Hanging out clothes to dry will save you energy and money over using a tumble drier.
Fill a jug with tap water and leave it to cool in your fridge. You’ll save water by not having to run the tap for ages to get a cold drink.
Giving your plants’ roots a good soaking once or twice a week in dry weather is much better than lightly watering them every day because most of that water just evaporates away. However, new plants do need regular watering until they are established.
Make sure your radiators are clear so they can heat the space efficiently. Curtains or furniture can easily block them.
Save energy with your washing machine. Modern washing powders often let you achieve the same results with lower temperatures.
Still using tungsten, halogen or fluorescent bulbs? Changing to LED lighting can save energy and money.
Solid brick walls can be insulated internally or externally to reduce heat loss.
Make the most of your oven. Filling an oven and batch cooking meals can save energy and money. If you share your home with others, planning meals and eating collectively can help build relationships whilst saving both energy and money.
Fit a water butt to collect rainwater. Your roof collects about 85,000 litres of rain each year (around 450 butts full). That’s water you can use for your plants and to wash the car, and it’s free!
Insulate hot water pipes along their full length. Don’t waste the energy you have used to heat your hot water.
